You may want to read the rest of Fritz Haber’s Wikipedia entry. He was not trying to develop ammonia fertilizer so that he could feed the world. That was merely the result of his work and not his driving intention. He doesn’t belong on the same page as Jonas Salk. He was a devoted German officer during World War I who used his scientific knowledge to advance the principles of Chemical Warfare. His contributions led to the ‘kind’ deaths and injuries of 10’s of thousands of French, British, and Allied soldiers through the use of chlorine gas artillery shells. Moreover, the Haber process for the production of ammonia gas is the foundation in the industrial scale formation of Nitrogen compounds, which were the primary components of explosives at the time. I think you will find that he probably killed through directly, and indirectly through the legacy of his chemical research, more people than were saved by ‘others’ who employed his ammonia producing techniques as fertilizers.
