Humans of New York

HONY’s creator and chief story teller is the always energetic and amiable Brandon Stanton. After losing his job trading bonds in Chicago in 2010, Stanton decided to pack up his things, move to New York City, and take portraits of total strangers. His mom wasn’t exactly thrilled by this decision, but we are so thankful that he took the risk.

The concept is simple: Stanton meanders the streets and parks of New York City and photographs people who interest him. While shooting his subjects, he asks pointed questions about their life. The end product is a beautiful and intimate portrait of the humans who make up New York. Below you’ll discover what we find to be the most inspiring and hopeful portraits from the last four years of Stanton’s work.

What is InspireMore?

Take a moment and think about the times in your life when you have felt the most pumped-up, the most loved and, most importantly, the most alive. Maybe it was after you laughed with friends until it hurt, wentwingsuiting for the first time, or felt the amazing love of your father. We can’t get enough of these moments. But yet…we don’t get enough of them. Why is that? If these are the moments that make life truly great, why don’t we have or try to have more of them?

No matter the answer or excuse, we can do better. We know it. We know we can live for more!

This is why InspireMore was created…to inspire people to live a more vibrant, fulfilled life than ever before. That is our passion and purpose.

  1. I got choked up over At a Crossroad. What an amazing boss to show such care for an employee. I also love, just love Reason Why. What a perfect response.

Thank you for this lovely insight into the lives of extraordinary people.

  2. This is really inspiring — and it comes from people most of us would deem ordinary. Compare this to the often mean-spirited humor blog People of Walmart, and it’s like night and day. Imagine how different the People of Walmart blog would be if it were run like Humans of New York. All POW shows us is a comically big woman in a power scooter. It doesn’t show us that she suffers many complications from years of diabetes, but still works two jobs to help provide for her kids, whom she literally loves more than her own life. I’m certain there would be just as many inspiring life stories to be found in Walmart as on the streets of New York City, but the author is too busy pointing out ugly people, disgracing those who engage in fashion faux pas, or laughing at toilet paper stuck to a shoe to find out.
