Trick or Treat

On the eve of Halloween, I find myself reflecting on both past Halloweens and the one that is upon us now.  As much as I love candy, there truly is no sweeter treat than kindness, especially when it comes from children.  Recently, I was touched by how children from a local church made sure that the guests at the day shelter for homeless men where I am employed would receive some special treats this year.

Our guests do not always have much to celebrate in their daily lives, as their focus is on meeting their basic needs and surviving on the streets, and sweets are definitely a luxurious treat.  That said, as much as the gentlemen savored the delicacies that were tucked inside of each of the treat bags, it was the actual bags themselves that really made the guys smile from ear to ear.

If you look closely at the above picture, you will see various seasonal pictures and kind messages decorating the outside of each bag.  If you want to see a group of grown men collectively melt, just present them with something created by children.  While our guests always are appreciative of all of the generous donations that are given to them, there is something about a gift from a child that is even more meaningful to them.

Perhaps, it is because children are innocent and pure of heart.  Maybe, it is because being unconditionally loved and accepted by a child is one of the greatest treasures ever.  It could be because these children remind them of their childhood or children of their own, or it also may have something to do with being remembered on a holiday that most people overlook as an opportunity to do something kind for others.  Regardless of the reason, this group of children made a group of men who are homeless smile and feel cared about, and that is a priceless treat that will last long after the last trick-or-treater goes home tomorrow evening.

So, tomorrow, channel your own inner child and follow the lead of these Kentucky kids and look for ways to share treats throughout the day.  Can’t scare up any ideas?  Here are a few suggestions to get the kind and creative juices flowing:

• Donate dog and cat treats/food to a local animal shelter
• Treat yourself to something decadent, such as a massage or a pedicure
• Buy a stranger a cup of coffee
• Leave a note of thanks for someone who wouldn’t expect it, like a teacher, a sanitation worker, a store clerk, etc.
• Make a donation to a loved one’s favorite charity in their honor or memory
• Call someone who is need of some good cheer

Kindness needs no reason and knows no season, so, make each and every day an opportunity to treat yourself and others to some kindness.
