On this twentieth day of December, I experienced a moment of pure contentment courtesy of my youngest daughter. After a busy day of running errands and tying up the last-minute loose ends of Christmas preparation, she asked if we could go out to eat at one of her favorite local restaurants while my older daughter completed some service hours for school. I always enjoy one-on-one time with each of my daughters, so, I readily agreed to this informal dinner date.
We enjoyed our meal together, which was punctuated with chatter and laughter, and afterward, she asked if we could stop at a nearby store. Again, I honored her request and am glad that I did, as it led to the moment I alluded to earlier. For at that store, my daughter suggested that I buy a candle, appropriately described as a “stress relief” aromatherapy candle. The scent was pleasing, as was the discounted price, so, I bought it.
As soon as we returned home, she made her final request, which was to light the candle and cuddle with her on the couch. It was such a simple, yet incredibly sweet, request from my pre-teen child, and without hesitation, I lit the new candle and in its glow, we curled up together in silence. The warmth of her skin, the aromatic fragrance of the candle, and our rhythmic breathing and heartbeats ushered in peace and quiet that we both relished, and it was a wonderful way to wind down at the end of this busy Saturday.
After some time had passed, my daughter remarked, “We need to do this more often, Mom”, and once again, I found myself in complete agreement. As I blew out the candle, I promised that we would do this again soon, and I always keep my promises.
Aw, thank you, Sheila! I feel like my girls both grew up in a blink of an eye, and I try to savor each and every moment with them. Moments like tonight are among my favorite indeed, and I am so grateful for them.
This special moment was at least in part due to your openness to your daughter’s suggestions. That set the stage for her to show her kindness and loving. Your daughter is very special and you allow and encourage her to be. Your story is a perfect example to those who wonder why they don’t see any beauty in this life – it’s because they don’t let it in.
