Today We Bagged Over 5,000 lbs of Food for Children Living in Food Insecure Homes.
This started in part because children would report to the free clinic on Mondays complaining of stomach cramps which turned out to simply be hunger.
The organization takes them to the schools, where they are discreetly distributed to the children.
Sadly, the packages are deliberately designed so they can be hidden. There’s one case where a child would bury it in the backyard so the adults wouldn’t steal the food.
Getting ready to pack Bags of Blessings
Today our firm for the second year in a row helped package “Bags of Blessings”, a ministry of the CARE Center in New Hope, Alabama.
Bags of Blessings assembly line
Bags of Blessings go to children living in homes with food insecurity, meaning without these packages, they may not eat between school lunch on Friday and school breakfast on Monday.
Bags of Blessings contents 1
Each bag contains food items that can be opened and consumed with no help from adults. The two cans of food are pop-top lids, and can be eaten cold. Food is bought at a local food bank, or donated or bought at a deep discount from local grocery stores.
Bags of Blessings contents 2
Each bag contains
1 can of Chef Boyardee, 1 can of Progresso soup, 1 mixed fruit cup, 1 pair of Pop-Tarts, 2 packs of cheese crackers (the Toast Chee kind), 1 bag of pretzels, 1 bag of cookies, 1 Nature Valley bar, 1 NutriGrain bar. Each bag is designed so that it can be easily carried in a backpack, both in its size and weight.
Bags of Blessings specifics
In the end, our group put together around 1,800 bags, which equates to over 5,000 lbs of food. This is about a month’s supply of Bags of Blessings for the students.
See the thank you notes below from a few of the children who received a BOB (Bags of Blessings)!
Other areas have similar programs as Bags of Blessings. If you can find one, please go learn more and either donate your time and/or money!
This is such a worthy cause – These great people are doing what’s needed to help children who hunger.

Well done. We throw away about 40% of our food in the US, much of directly from the farms as unpicked items, which are not pretty enough for the big grocers. It is cheaper for the farmers to throw it away. A bill on Congress stalled to provide incentives for the farmers to get these vegetables and fruits to people in need. Please write your Congressional representative and senator to make this happen. As an aside, rotting fruit in landfills releases methane into the air which wreaks more havoc.
