Officer Dan Hicks in North Carolina extended a hand of compassion to a man in apparent distress on Wednesday evening.

The part where they hug… it’s just so human…

Officer Talks Suicidal Man Out of Jumping off of Bridge

“He got a big old Dan Hicks bear hug, whether he wanted it or not,” Hicks said.

“The other part of it was he was not going to be given the opportunity to go over that bridge again. He got to stand there with me for a second and get that hug. Call it tactical, call it compassionate, I think it was probably both.”

We’re pleased to here Officer Hicks confirmed that the man received mental health support after the incident.

  1. Thank you for posting this! I happened to catch this on the news yesterday. When the man hugged the officer (literally clinging on for dear life) I felt both of their gratitude. Thank you as always; you know I love this blog!!! Cher xo

      1. Thanks, Mike. As the wife of a police officer it has been difficult seeing so much negativity directed at them in recent days. I am appreciative that you chose to share this story to help show the kind, gentle side of policing…especially on this anniversary of the day when so many gave their lives.
