Mike is a donkey from Killorglin in Ireland.
He almost drowned when a river next to his field broke its banks and flooded stranding him in a ditch on Sunday.
But never fear, this story does have a happy ending! Animal Heaven Animal Rescue were on hand and rescued Mike with nothing but a small dingy and an orange lifebouy.
Rescuer Suzanne Gibbons, who runs AHAR, said she only had one chance to rescue Mike due to the rapidly rising flood waters.
“At first I couldn’t find anybody willing to help me go in because the river was flooding really badly,” Suzanne said.
“But finally Mike Fleming of the Killorglin Rowing Club took me out and we managed to get a life ring around the donkey’s neck and drag him to safety.”
Now just look at that lovely grin! *swoons*
Mike is now recovering from his ordeal at Suzanne’s place where he is being properly pampered.
“We had a vet check him over because we were worried about him getting pneumonia and he slept under a heat lamp but he seems fine this morning.
He has a small bit of fluid in one lung but our vet said he will recover. All he needs is loads of TLC’.”
They added:
‘We loved every moment saving Mike and I think I speak for all of us, he was so worth the danger just to see his little face on dry land. Thanks for all your lovely comments and support.’
Huge smiles of relief all round then.

Think about all the smiles on chickens, cows, pigs, horses, elephants, rabbits, ducks, geese, monkeys, chimpanzees (need I say more) if we didn’t eat them, consume their secretions, use them for entertainment or experimentation.

There’s a great organization that promotes compassion for all in Ireland called The Compassion Foundation of Ireland (http://thecompassionfoundation.org/). It promotes veganism. That way, you’re not being kind to a select few.

I was just making reference to this particular organisation because of the story but all organisations for humans and animals here in Ireland are doing amazing work.
