Our kids are in CRISIS.

I work with teenagers in an affluent suburban area.

They don’t comprehend what they read. They use calculators to multiply 10 x 10. The average high school junior has no clue what the word “diligent” means. They write essays resembling those of a 5th grader.

In tests administered in reading, science and math to 15 year-olds globally, we are behind TWENTY NINE countries in math. And our kids’ performance in reading and science is  not much better. And yet, American investment in education is unrivaled, globally.

Are you scared yet?

We lead the world in the consumption of illegal recreational drugs. And one of the chief sales outlets?

Our SCHOOLS.

Our teenage suicide rate is the highest in the world.

EVERY DAY there are over 5,400 suicide attempts by kids in grades 7 – 12.

NOW are you scared?

The two places teenagers spend most of their time are online…

  1. This is an unfortunate epidemic. I myself am raising a teen, we are finding that the schools are pressuring kids to be thinking too far ahead about their future. If they don’t know in junior high, what they want to do straight out of high school, it’s already too late. Many successful people start or restart their careers late in life. I feel kids aren’t taught this. Not everyone can or should be a doctor or a lawyer either.

  2. The danger is far greater than this blogger s talking about, and the responses to this blog are missing the whole point. TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, Hollywood, music, techy toys of all sorts are all geared to deplete the intelligence of our population, and our kids are the biggest targets. All those big bucks poured in our educational system is being spent on things that lower knowledge and intelligence. Their goal is to make a bunch of robot slaves out of our kids – do, but don’t think. Jump, but don’t even bother to ask, “How high?” – just jump.

Our kids are deprived of the God given nurturing that is supposed to come from their parents. The school teachers have been forced to become parents to every child in their class room. The school instruction our kids are supposed to get, has been watered down and filled with all sorts of nonsense at the edicts of our government.

Home schooling is the best education a child an get. That way, they get both the nurturing they so desperately need, and the best education. Their “textbooks” aren’t controlled by the state and they get the individual attention that is so vital to a child’s understanding of the material being taught. Yet, the government trying to out-law home schooling, so they can control what our kids learn, as in the government propaganda – not the truth.

Here’s the kindness side of my message. Parents, your kids will love and respect you beyond the imagination of today’s world, if you take the time to listen to them; help them resolve issues of any and every kind; expose them to the cultures the schools have declared to be unimportant, such as, the arts, music, literature, and dance. All of these can be found in museums of all sorts, through books, videos, DVDs and CDs, etc. Invite their questions, and show them how to get the answers.

Keep their home/family intact, well functioning and a welcome place to come to. Eat together, and not in front of a TV or even where you can hear it. Play together, but where there are no electronics involved.

Explore the world with them, and teach them the basic things, such as, cooking, sewing, crafting, the many benefits of nature and the outdoors. Get your exercise through hiking, biking, swimming, playing outdoor games, such as tennis, badminton, croquet, etc. There are all sorts of lawn games that kids played all the time 50 years ago – horseshoes, shuffle board, hide and seek, neighborhood softball, baseball, tag football, kickball, soccer. The list is endless. Don’t just exercise through mundane movement – the best and most productive exercise are the kinds listed above.

Take advantage of the local history to introduce them to the national and world history. Take advantage of Indian Reservations or cultural group meetings, so they can learn how and why other cultures do things. Exposure to culture of any and every kind will raise their IQs enormously and broaden their world view.

Let your kids know your undivided attention is with them, and tell them several times a day through your actions, your example, and your words that you love them and believe in them.

Don’t call your child a liar, that’s what they’ll become; don’t call them stupid or dummy, that’s what they’ll become. Were you aware that kids who are tagged with ADD or ADHD simply need to move. They have a very high physical IQ. There really is no such thing as Attention Deficit. That was invented to force kids to learn the academics of book learning. Physical activity is oil to the mechanisms of the brain that cause it to function more effectively.

Whatever I’ve left out, you’re capable of figuring out.

  3. The best article I have read on education ever. I quit the US public schools in late 70 as I could see this coming, no thinking what so ever. NO WONDER America is in the state it is in. The schools are the ONE place everybody is congragated at one time, supposedly to learn something. A friends kid asked me the other day, why do I need to memorise and learn math, it’s all on my phone. The schools stay in the dark ages with a few teachers bucking the system all the way, just to “teach” something actually useful, they usually get fired.

How do you turn an oil tanker with a row boat. 'Like ya, maybe trumpet will sort it all out'.

  4. With a PhD in politics, and experience teaching in colleges,I am not eligible to teach in any high school due to “certification.” Certification costs 50 thousand dollars, then they will not hire one because they already have a PhD and the unions will make them pay more. Teaching as a substitute, for about minimum wage, I was dismissed for third hand cigarette smoke despite all rules being obeyed. These things are well known and oft complained about, but the kids in the Congress offices do not understand. The tax payers are paying my school loans, after they pay to bury me, since I am now too old and beat up even to work in trades. But at least the teachers do not smoke!

  5. P. S. Gravitar has given me this emblem without my choice and against my will, probably because I won’t pay them with info. If we let the internet be controlled by the financial interests of billionaires, tyranny, not kindness, is the mathematical result. They have begun to help us speak, how nice!

    1. I greatly appreciate your knowledge. You have it right on the nose. Why do we need an avatar anyway? What’s wrong with a silhouette, or better yet, no picture/symbol/icon at all? This avatar is putting words into my mouth and presenting a false picture of me. I’m sure they would like me to be, but I’m not a robot, which is what this avatar looks like.
