ROXANA, Ill. – A fourth-grader at Roxana’s Central Elementary School is being hailed as a hero after jumping into action to save a classmate’s life.
Not many of us can ever boast of saving a life, but nine-year-old Emily Ogle did so earlier this week.
“Well, I was just sitting there eating my lunch and then I looked over at Kuper and I saw that his face was red…,” Emily said.
She noticed her classmate, Kuper Stevens, was choking on a bread stick during lunch Monday. He couldn’t breathe and was turning red.
“There was about this big of a string left in there,” Kuper said.
“And I’m like, ‘Are you choking?’ And he kinda nodded yes,” Emily said.
Despite the normal hustle and bustle and noise of an elementary school lunchroom, Emily knew exactly what to do. All because of what her father taught her.
“I did the Heimlich maneuver and I guess I got it out, but I didn’t think so. So I ran and got the monitor, but I guess I already got it out,” she said.
According to the girl’s mother, Emily was shown how to perform the Heimlich maneuver years, when she was only seven-years-old. Emily not only remembered what to do, but how to do it correctly.

There is a much bigger hero than that: Ambers O’Neil Shewmaker. Shewmaker, later became Troy Cansler (his stepfather adopted him and took the name Cansler), gave his life saving a woman, but God took him. Well done, rest in peace.

There is much bigger hero than that: Frank Alexander Butler. Butler, an Irish-American, was a 32nd degree Freemason in the Scottish Rite, a Knight Templar, and a Royal Arch Mason in the York Rite. Butler saved a woman, but God took him. Well done, Frank. Rest in peace.

There is a hero like that: United States Air Force Colonel Alan Dexter Wheeler. Wheeler, a veteran of the United States Army Air Forces and United States Air Force during World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam Era, saved a young girl but God took him.
