Firefighter Sean P. Coyle of Boston has gained worldwide praise and admiration for rescuing Sylvia, a 13-year-old Siberian husky that fell through the ice in Boston Harbor last week.
“As I got closer, I could see the ice was encapsulating him,” Coyle told the Boston Herald. “He was frozen and real scared. I’d say he had less than half an hour left.”
The dog already had been in the 20-degree water for a half-hour. A human would likely not have survived longer than 10 minutes, Coyle said, and noce Coyle pulled the dog out, the firefighter actually fell in himself. Luckily, he was attached to a rope and other firemen on the scene pulled him out.
Coyle, who works from South Boston’s Ladder 19, has been flooded with emails, texts and phone calls since photos of Sylvie’s rescue spread.
“We look at the pets like citizens,” Coyle said. “They’re loved by their owners and we want to make sure, whether it’s in a burning building or a freezing lake, we just want to get them out safe.”
