I remember these were always in hostels when I was travelling. I actually misunderstood the first time I encountered it. When I asked the Thai receptionist how much for a book she looked at me rather confused and, seemingly aggravated at my continued enquiry, shouted “take and leave! take and leave!” I though she meant just take it and get the hell out, only found out later I was supposed to leave one in return…
