Dr. Zbigniew Religa tracking the vital signs of a heart-transplant patient. “I never let him out of my sight, never turned my back on him,” he says. “This was the payoff.” It was 1987, in an outmoded operating room in post-Soviet Poland. His assistant is sleeping in the corner.
As the mother of an infant heart transplant recipient, this touches me deeply. Without doctors like this and all their teams who were invested in their patients and improving what often seem like irreversible damage, my daughter would not be alive today.
I find it interesting that, for example, actors and actresses on TV that are pretending to be nurses and doctors, can earn more than the real ones who are saving lives. Crazy world eh? 🙂
That’s how my cardiologists are. When I need them, they never let me out of their sight. Thank you for that beautiful visual representation of my personal experience.
And thank you for spreading kindness. It makes a difference, every time you do.
I had a four way by pass in Ocala Florida in March of 99. I was told that because of the condition of my heart and of my arteries that at best they guessed that I might live another three to four years if I was real careful. Well, it is 14 years and 8 months later now and by the grace of God and the talent of the doctors I am still breathing.
