What Happened When This Man ‘Dropped’ His Wallet 50 Times In Public

This social experiment showed that (most) people are truly good.

The video above, called “The Honesty Test,” was shot in Opole, Poland, and was posted to YouTube earlier this month. In the video, a man drops his wallet in public 50 times and records how many good Samaritans out there returned it to him.

The Polish at the beginning translates to “Hiya! In this video we’ll check people’s honesty and see who’ll give me my wallet back.”

Another recent experiment in Norway also showed us inspiring examples of human compassion when several strangers at a bus stop offered their winter coat to a cold little boy.

I like the odds and the message of this clip. Societies couldn’t function if those who did good things didn’t vastly outnumber those who did bad things. It is good that 1 of the 50 kept it, as it is a potent reminder that while most people have good hearts, one needs to remember that not everyone can be trusted. May the one who took it soon learn that the “gain” in taking it is illusory and what remains is pain. I wish an end to their pain, through wisdom obtained via the kindness and forgiveness of others.

  2. This would never happen in my area…but I would love to see this kind of thing happening all the time. It used to be commonplace.
