Finding A Passion and Purpose by Kim Trumbo
“He died.” The words I’ll never forget my mother telling me over the phone one day as I was driving home from work. Don’t worry I have hands-free Bluetooth in my vehicle, so I wasn’t holding a cell phone to my ear.
Often times when people lose a loved one they react in ways they never knew possible. My reaction several months after the death of my brother (who was only 27 years old) was that of “What is my purpose? How can I make this world a better place in this short time span I’m blessed to be alive on this planet?” I wasn’t sure at first. Then I found a love for listening to these free pieces of audio entertainment called podcasts! I decided surely there could be something I could say or get others to say (by way of a interview) that would inspire the world and make it a better place…surely, right? But what? I pondered this for a while.
During that time of pondering my family was sending money to an organization in Guatemala to help a child get an education. Because we are so blessed as a family we would often have conversations about how we’d like to give more, both monetarily as well as through volunteering our skills and time to other organizations, people, and animals in need. Those conversations never actually lead to us following through with those generous thoughts and ideas UNTIL the idea was born for me to start a podcast in which I could share stories from nonprofits, charities, and do-gooders in this world via weekly podcast episodes. I knew this would solve our family’s problem of not knowing how to give back more, or to whom. Plus, and more importantly, my goal has been to have others learn about the variety of generous people all over the world, so they would be inspired to give back and be more generous themselves.
This podcasting journey with my show called Generosity Philosophy Podcast has been happening for the past year. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to share the stories of these amazing people who are helping children, the elderly, those with disabilities, animals, Veterans, helping the environment, and more.
The reason I wanted to share this story of mine with you is so you understand how I went from a person who knew absolutely NOTHING about how to start a podcast, how to create a website, or who I would even interview, to someone who’s now living my life’s passion. You see, once I knew this could be my purpose in life it became my passion.
My goal and hope for you is you will find your purpose in life and go after it passionately. Don’t let fear or those creeping feelings of, “what am I doing and why would anyone care” get in your way! There is so much free (and paid) information out there on the internet you have access to. Unless you use the excuse of “not having time” you CAN create something amazing.
The Generosity Philosophy Podcast has now been “live” for one year. It has been listened to hundreds of thousands of times by people in close to 100 Countries. I’m just one person, but am doing my part to make this world a better place. If I can do it, so can you!
