One North Carolina high school student showed off his sneaker enthusiasm and his Christmas spirit, all in one kind gesture.
Yaovi Mawuli, (standing on the left in the photo below) a high school student from the Greensboro, N.C. area, spotted one of his classmates sporting a pair of non-fancy, torn sneakers. Unfortunately, other kids in their French class were making fun of the worn shoes, but Mawuli felt compassion and decided to take action to help his classmate.
Talking on Facebook, he posted to the Greensboro Sneakerheads group for advice on how he should reveal to his classmate the gift of a new pair of popular sneakers.
In an interview in NiceKicks, Yaovi explains how he came to the United States from Togo, and couldn’t afford sneakers back then, so he knew how his classmate felt.
I could not leave with the fact that such a cool guy would be made fun of in this way. I remember I got made fun of for wearing some shoes that had 2006 on them while we were in years 2008. But nobody knew what I did to get that pair of shoes. I would cut my neighbor’s lawn and take out her trash and she would give me $20 which I save to buy in order to buy that pair of shoes. So I understand not everyone is fortunate enough to afford new pairs of sneakers.
Mawuli’s classmate appreciated the fancy footwear and the two even posed for a quick Facebook photo. The teens are now friends, all thanks to a little bit of Christmas kindness 🙂
