Kindness Thwarts a Vicious Attack – By Russ Towne

I lived about ten miles from my high school. I normally caught a ride to and from school from someone who lived near my home. One day I learned after everyone I knew had left school that my normal ride wasn’t available. I decided to walk home.

Thinking I knew a short-cut that would reduce my hike by at least half a mile, I ended up on a dead-end road in an old industrial area way off the correct route. I realized my mistake, turned around and came face to face with a guard dog who growled ferociously. I stopped. He edged closer. Retreating was a dead-end, and he blocked my escape. He continued to bare his fangs, growling ominously as he moved closer. I knew that running would probably trigger him and decided against it. I’d run out of ideas and prepared to be viciously attacked.

A driver sized up the situation, drove to us, and used his vehicle to try to back the dog away from me. This appeared to infuriate the canine even more but it grudgingly gave way an inch at a time. When the man had nudged his car between us, he yelled, “Get in!” He didn’t have to ask twice.

Shaking, I let out a big breath and thanked him. He asked where I was headed and drove me the rest of the way home though it meant a round trip of perhaps fifteen miles out of his way in city rush hour traffic.

Forty years later, the memory of his kindness still warms my heart and brings a smile to my face.
