Recognizing Those That go Unnoticed
by Hilary Joyner
I work at a job in an office from 8am – 5pm. I arrive at a clean office everyday and don’t think twice about it. I make my coffee, have my breakfast and get to work. I’ve grown accustomed to the clean space I’ve been used to and never really think about how it got that way.
Over the last few weeks I have had more interactions with the wonderful person responsible for my happy office space. A woman that spends her evenings making sure that my days are clean and comfortable. Every time I see her she compliments me. “Your hair is adorable sweetie!'” “Your hair is beautiful!” “Honey you look great!”
There have been days where I find myself moping through the hallways. I catch a bad angle of myself and see my imperfections. I think about all the things I haven’t accomplished. Then I see her. I see the smiling, happy lady that always welcomes me with a cheery hello.
My interactions with her are always positive and to experience someone so genuinely kind, well, it truly brightens my day.

Recently she passed me and my co-worker cleaning up our area of the warehouse. We had several boxes that needed to be brought outside but we didn’t know how to unlock the doors to use the recycling. With a big smile she offered to take everything out for us.
She said, “you girls have much better things to do than take this out. Now go! You are dressed too pretty to be out here.”
She didn’t have to help us but she did. This wasn’t a part of her job. She did it because she is kind.
Everyday she helps make my work environment better simply by doing her job. I didn’t notice her for a long time. It is all too easy to ignore what we don’t see and forget to recognize those who help make our lives better.
She makes my work life better everyday and now she has even become someone I turn to for a ray of sunshine. Her kind spirit radiates.
Kindness can be demonstrated in the smallest of actions: a smile; a friendly hello; kind words. When we exude kindness we have the ability to make the world a better place.
Spread the kindness. Be the positive force in someone’s life.

I wasn’t sure how the story was going to turn out. I imagined this woman who cleans everything so nicely might just reach out to try to improve your appearance on those tougher mornings. Oh, wait, that’s what she did, by bringing a smile to your face.
Thanks for passing it on.

I always say good morning to our office ‘tea lady’ who also cleans our small school. To help her, I insist that all my students put their empty coffee cups, water bottles, etc. in the bin as they exit. Reminding people to be mindful is a good thing. I brought my own coffee mug to school and I wash it and put it up on the shelf every day, she doesn’t have to clean after me like she does all the others. Always show respect and gratitude to those who enable your working life to go smoother.
